It was brought to my attention that teachers all over the United States are stressing over the Common Core. I'm not!
For years, I prayed to have these standards in place. I felt bad when I taught in states with high military populations because when they would PCS, sometimes their children would not be able to graduate. There weren't any standards in place to accommodate them. I remember a Navy family moved to the state of Virginia and was told their daughter would not be able to graduate because she did not have SOL's for 9 and 10 grade. Plus Virginia History and all the crazy things that she needed.
Or when the students moved from Florida to Virginia, they would not be able to pass the SOL since comprehensions is tested on SOL for third grades and Fluency is what drives Florida's third grade assessment. This is outrageous. Now when they move from state to state, they will be aware of what is going on. So with this in mind, I will help you all on the core standards, reading pieces, strategies, diversity in the classroom, and inclusion for all.
Do not let this stress you, perhaps now you can have the opportunity to be creative and not let your classroom be driven by testing. Let the children have a ball. Learn how to structure your test to the standard.
This is the first day of a beautiful friendship.
